Beginning in 1999, Karen Sue Rolph-Morales established Casa Inkarna Field Research Station where she is using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technologies to map language loss near Huaras in the Cordillera Blanca. The research, funded by the National Science Foundation and Morrison Institute for Population And Resource Studies includes production ecology and toponymic multivariate analyses. For instance, there is a correlation between language loss and use of genetically modified potatoes in this area. Nancy H Hornberger, University of Pennsylvania informs about some of her activities: "In August 2000, I paid a short visit to Luis Enrique López and colleagues at PROEIB-Andes, the Programa de Formación en Educación Intercultural Bilingüe para los Países Andinos (Graduate program in Bilingual Intercultural Education for the Andean Countries), University of San Simón in Cochabamba. I met with a cohort of graduate students at the thesis-writing stage, for an informal workshop on ethnographic approaches to data analysis. Then, in La Paz, I participated with colleagues from PROEIB and the Bolivian Ministry of Education in a week-long workshop convened by the Vice-Minister of Education to evaluate the National Education Reform curriculum and materials for the teaching of Spanish as a Second Language, the Taller de Reflexión y Análisis sobre la Enseñanza del Castellano como Segunda Lengua. Other international participants were Utta vonGleich (Germany), Pascal Montoisy (Belgium), Marilda Cavalcanti (Brasil), Viviana Galdames (Chile), Eliana Soto (Eduador), Aida Walqui (USA), Cheri Micheau (USA), Leo van Lier (USA), Enrique Hamel (Mexico), Luis Vásquez (Peru), and Carolyn Benson (Sweden)."
Dr. M.J. Hardman indicates that there is a new grammar of Jaqaru. Jaqaru, a member of the Jaqi family of languages (Jaqaru, Kawki, Aymara), is spoken in the Andes Mountains of Peru by a few thousand people resident both in Tupe and nearby villages and as migrants in cities. Children today are all bilingual in Jaqaru and Spanish. Access to Tupe is by a foot and pack animal road.
The phonemic system distinguishes 36 consonants but only 3 vowels. Vowel dropping is significant, complex and pervasive, marking case and phrase structure as well as style.
The language makes extensive use of morphology, with all verbs carrying several suffixes. Syntax is morphologically marked; verbal person suffixes mark simultaneously object/subject; data source is marked at all levels of grammar. Within the nominal system inclusive/exclusive and humanness are marked.
MJ Hardman is Professor of Anthropology and Linguistics at the University of Florida. She began study of Jaqaru in the fifties and has since been continually involved with one or another of the Jaqi languages for which she has written grammar, teaching materials and cultural studies. She founded INEL (Instituto Nacional de Estudios Lingüísticos) in Bolivia and the Aymara Language Material Program at the University of Florida. Her current research also involves language and gender and the patterning of worldview in languages. hardman@ufl.edu

Estudia los cambios culturales que ocurren entre los quichuahablantes. Es también cantante profesional de música indígena con grupos de Otavalo, Imbabura, Saraguro y Salasaca, Ecuador. Escribe artículos ralacionados con varios aspectos de la cultura otavaleña y de Saraguro: música, lengua, los cambios de estructura familiar causados por la migración a los Estados Unidos y a Europa.

La Universidad Ricardo Palma, Lima-Perú organizó El I Congreso de Lenguas Modernas del 4 al 6 de agosto de 1999. Fueron ponentes del mencionado evento: Michael Launey (CNRS-Francia), Adalberto Salas (U. de Concepción-Chile), Ana Gerzenstein (U. de Buenos Aires-Argentina), Aryon Rodrigues (U. de Brasilia-Brazil), Jon Landaburu (U. de los Andes-Colombia) y Rodolfo Cerrón-Palomino (UNMSM-Perú). Hubo 10 secciones: Fonología; Gramática; Semántica y Lexicografía; Análisis del Discurso; Sociolingüística y Dialectología; Educación Bilingüe e Intercultural y Política Lingüística; Estudios Histórico-Comparativos; Lenguas en contacto; Filología Amerindia; y Onomástica. La Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú-Facultad de Letras y Ciencias Humanas organizó el curso "Ancient Peruvian World. An Interdisciplinary View" (Mundo Peruano Antiguo. Una Visión Interdisciplinaria) Este curso se llevó a cabo entre el 7 de febrero y el 10 de marzo del 2000 y abarcó las especialidades Arqueología, Bibliotecología, Geografía, Historia, Lingüística y Psicología.
El curso consistió en 10 clases y fue dictado íntegramente a través de Internet. Cada una de las conferencias a las que accedía los inscritos estaban trabajadas en soporte multimedia. Además podían enviar sus diversas preguntas, comentarios y/o sugerencias a una determinada dirección electrónica que funcionó como aula virtual.

The Centro Bartolomé de Las Casas in Cuzco (Peru) is pleased to announce the opening of admission for its linguistic summer program in Quechua.
Our courses, are designed to develop communicative ability in both the oral and written field and are divided into three levels:
Basic, to introduce participants to the fundamental principles of communication.
Intermediate, to consolidate previously acquired knowledge and introduce the participant to more complex linguistic structures.
Advanced, to develop a fluent use of language where the student is able to manage varying types of discourse and modes of interpretation.
Courses are intensive, with 4 hours daily Monday to Friday, amounting to a total of 140 teaching hours over the seven-week stay. In addition, the student will be expected to complete set exercises in his or her own time.
Classroom hours will be complemented by cultural activities that reinforce linguistic skills and provide an understanding of the culture and traditions of the Quechua speaking peoples of Cuzco.

This course is a field study of the oral history, literature, art, and religious life of the Quichua Indian people. It provides immersion in the Quichua language and practical training in contemporary field work methods. A unique perspective is gained by living and working with native communities in the Andes Mountains and Amazonian Forests. Members of these communities serve as co-teachers in the courses.

CORNELL Summer Program in Cochabamba, Bolivia
The Latin American Studies Program at Cornell University is cosponsoring a special program for undergraduate juniors and seniors, and graduate students. The program combines studies of Andean culture and literature, past and present, with language studies in Quechua. Intermediate Spanish proficiency is required to participate.

Los estudios diacrónicos del aimara han permanecido estancados por mucho tiempo a falta de materiales comparatísticos variados y representativos de toda la familia lingüística (imporpiamente llamada jaqi o aru) en sus dos grandes ramas: central y sureña. El libro Lingüística Aimara constituye el primer esfuerzo por ofrecer una reconstrucción de la protolengua (PA) y señalar los pasos evolutivos que dieron lugar a sus versiones dialectales modernas no sólo desde el putno de vista estrictamente lingüístico sino también dentro del contexto sociohistórico andino. Para ello, el autor echó mano tanto de materiales novedosos provenientes del aimara central (hablado en las serranías de Lima) como de la rica información documental colonial hasta ahora muy poco aprovechada. De esta manera, el libro constitye un verdadero esfuerzo por presentar una buena síntesis de los estudios aimarísticos, en la que el problema obligado de las relaciones entre esta lengua y el quechua constituye también un tema ampliamente tratado.

En esta monografía se recogen estudios sobre las gramáticas de las lenguas amerindias. Se comentan gramáticas de las lenguas otomí, tarasco, náhuatal, quechua, mapuche, guaraní y el millcayac. A modo de epílogo se analiza la política lingüística española y se da una respuesta a la cuestión de hasta en qué medida se encuentran repercusiones de los ‘descubrimientos lingüísticos’ del Nuevo Mundo en el pensamiento lingüístico español.
