How To Apply

Applying to graduate school at UIUC is simple. Prospective students must fill an online application available at http://www.grad.uiuc.edu/admissions/apply/program.htm.

This online graduate application is part of the ApplyYourself Application Network. You will receive a PIN and Password so that you can return to work on your application over several sessions. Your information is transmitted through a secured server and is kept confidential until you submit your application. IMPORTANT: In the Applicant Statement, please include a discussion of the language(s) you have studied and/or plan to study, and how your language study relates to your academic and professional objectives in Latin American Studies.

Provide Letters of Reference from three people who know you well and who can evaluate your potential for advanced study. These letters can be attached to the online application or submitted in paper to the Graduate College.

Official transcripts from all colleges you have attended or are attending should be sent in a sealed envelope directly to the Center.

The scores from your Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and, if applicable, your Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL),must be presented to the University of Illinois. All students regardless of citizenship are screened for English proficiency by the Office of Admissions and Records. If you have not had two or more academic years of full-time instruction at an institution where English is the primary language of instruction, prior to the term of enrollment, then you are required to take the TOEFL and have your test results sent to the Office of Admissions and Records before you can be admitted. If you are exempt from the TOEFL, you must take the GRE and have your test results sent to the Office of Admissions and Records.

If you are not a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, you must provide the University Admissions Officer with a detailed statement of the financial resources that will enable you to live in the US for the duration of your studies at the University of Illinois.

GRE and TOEFL CODE NUMBERS

The GRE and TOEFL code numbers for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are 1836. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of our MA program in Latin American Studies, there is no GRE or TOEFL code number indicated for this concentration. Please use code number 5199 for the GRE code number for Latin American Studies, which is reserved for those departments that do not have an assigned code number. Use code number 99 for the TOEFL code number for Latin American Studies, which is reserved for those departments that do not have an assigned code number.

TOEFL TEST REQUIREMENT

You must get a minimum of 550 (paper-based TOEFL test) or 213 (computer-based TOEFL test) to be admitted to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. You need a TOEFL score of at least 610 (paper) or 253 (computer) to pass out of the required English as a Second Language Placement Test (EPT).
