Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship

FLAS Fellowships for Academic Year 2008–2009 and Summer 2008

FLAS Fellowships are administered by the University of Illinois National Resource Centers and are awarded competitively through an annual competition. Students from all departments and professional schools are encouraged to apply.

CLACS FLAS fellowships may be used for the study of Quechua, or another Amerindian language, or Brazilian Portuguese. Priority is given to the study of less commonly taught languages. Under exceptional circumstances, advanced (or third-year) Spanish study may be allowed.

For more information and to apply, please visit the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) website. The application deadline is Feb. 15, 2008, but try to hand materials to your department at least a couple of weeks prior to the deadline. Please read the application instructions carefully and make sure you have gathered all the information you need before beginning the online application, because once you begin the application you must complete and submit it in one session. You will not be able to save your work or start over.

Summer 2008: CLACS has at least six summer FLAS fellowships to award for summer 2008. The awards carry a stipend of $2,500 plus tuition and fees of $4,000. Students desiring to study overseas are advised to confer with the CLACS FLAS coordinator early in the planning process. Students should also check for other sources of funding. Many of these have earlier application dates.

Academic Year 2008–2009: CLACS has nine academic-year FLAS fellowships to award for 2008-2009 to qualified graduate students. The awards carry a stipend of $15,000 payable over the academic year as well as a waiver of tuition and most student fees.
